ALG - Shaheen and Democrats Filibuster Stops DHS Funding Bill From Vote

6

Feb. 5, 2015

Dear Liberty Activist,

Click here to urge the Senate to bring the DHS funding bill to the floor!

Senate Republicans have three times this week attempted to bring legislation to the floor. But Harry Reid won't let that happen.

Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statement urging Senate Democrats to cease their filibuster of Department of Homeland Security funding:

"For the third time, Senate Democrats are jeopardizing homeland security to protect President Obama's unconstitutional action granting amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants. With all the threats facing the homeland, now is not the time to allow politics to interfere with our nation's security. Let the bill come to the floor as is.

"If Senate Democrats wish to offer an amendment to the Department of Homeland Security funding, they can do that, but they need to allow the bill to be acted upon. If they can muster the votes to change it, it will be changed. As it stands, funding expires at the end of the month, and the world is not getting any safer.

"In the meantime, we urge the Senate majority to continue holding cloture votes on this important piece of legislation so that the process can move forward, and members have an opportunity to make their voices heard. The House has done its job. Now it's time for the Senate to get to work."

You can see the votes here, and how your senators have voted:

Feb 05

On Cloture on the Motion to Proceed

H.R. 240

Feb 04

On Cloture on the Motion to Proceed

H.R. 240

Feb 03

51 (51-48)

Rejected

On Cloture on the Motion to Proceed

H.R. 240

You know what to do! Republican leaders promised the American people they would attach a prohibition on Obama's unconstitutional action granting amnesty to millions of Americans to the bill, and they have.

Now they need your support.

Let's get on Rally Congress and urge the Senate to allow the Department of Homeland Security funding bill to the floor of the Senate.

And keep fighting!

For Liberty,

Townhall - GALLUP: Yeah, That 5.6% Unemployment Figure Is A Lie

Matt Vespa | Feb 04, 2015

A nauseating State of the Union address from Barack Obama has come and gone, and a triumphant Obama (yeah, I don’t why he feels that why either) said that the country has turned the page:

Tonight, after a breakthrough year for America, our economy is growing and creating jobs at the fastest pace since 1999. Our unemployment rate is now lower than it was before the financial crisis. More of our kids are graduating than ever before. More of our people are insured than ever before. And we are as free from the grip of foreign oil as we’ve been in almost 30 years.

Finally, Gallup has pointed out that this is highly misleading. Reports will show the unemployment rate is at 5.6 percent, but it’s hardly worth celebrating about once it’s all broken down:

If you, a family member or anyone is unemployed and has subsequently given up on finding a job -- if you are so hopelessly out of work that you've stopped looking over the past four weeks -- the Department of Labor doesn't count you as unemployed. That's right. While you are as unemployed as one can possibly be, and tragically may never find work again, you are not counted in the figure we see relentlessly in the news -- currently 5.6%. Right now, as many as 30 million Americans are either out of work or severely underemployed. Trust me, the vast majority of them aren't throwing parties to toast "falling" unemployment.

There's another reason why the official rate is misleading. Say you're an out-of-work engineer or healthcare worker or construction worker or retail manager: If you perform a minimum of one hour of work in a week and are paid at least $20 -- maybe someone pays you to mow their lawn -- you're not officially counted as unemployed in the much-reported 5.6%. Few Americans know this.[...]

NY Times - Deflation Experiments Show Patriots May Have a Point After All

The New York Times

JAMES GLANZ

Thomas Healy does not have tickets to the Super Bowl, but he plans to fly to Phoenix with something that is even harder to come by than seats at Sunday’s game: the first detailed, experimental data on how atmospheric conditions might have reduced the air pressure in footballs used by the New England Patriots in their victory over the Indianapolis Colts nearly two weeks ago.

Those footballs, which the N.F.L. has said were deflated to pressures below league standards, have created a national meta-bowl whose outcome is seemingly as important as who wins on Sunday. The question driving the public dialogue is whether the Patriots tampered with the balls to make them easier to handle, or whether simply moving them from the warmth of a locker room to the chill and dampness of the field could account for the deflation.

The Patriots have absorbed a beating in that larger contest, with many scientists concluding that only the surreptitious hiss of air being released from the balls could explain the difference. But now the Patriots have started to rally, and in a big way. Healy, who provided The New York Times with an advance copy of his technical paper on the experiments, concluded that most or all of the deflation could be explained by those environmental effects.

“This analysis looks solid to me,” said Max Tegmark, a professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who reviewed the paper at The Times’s request. “To me, their measurements mean that there’s no evidence of foul play.”

ALG - Why are Republicans attempting to thread the needle on climate change?

By Robert Romano

"[I]t is the sense of Congress that — (1) climate change is real; and (2) human activity contributes to climate change."

That was part of an amendment offered by Sen. John Hoeven (R-N.D.) to S.1, legislation that will require the Obama administration to allow construction of the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada to the U.S.

It drew the support of 59 senators, including 15 Republicans: Senators Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Dean Heller (R-Nev.), Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), John McCain (R-Ariz.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Bob Portman (R-Ohio), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), and Pat Toomey (R-Penn.).

Hoeven voted against his own amendment, which fell one vote short of the 60 votes needed for passage.

Right afterward, Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) offered a second amendment that Democrats preferred. It read: "[I]t is the sense of Congress that — (1) climate change is real; and (2) human activity significantly contributes to climate."

That version of the amendment only drew the support of 50 senators, including just 5 Republicans: Alexander, Ayotte, Collins, Graham, and Kirk.

This time it was 10 votes short.

Yet, the two votes — just 21 minutes apart — signify very interesting political positioning by Republicans on the issue.

The position for at least 10 of the Senate Republicans — Corker, Flake, Hatch, Heller, McCain, Murkowski, Paul, Portman, Rounds, and Toomey — is that climate change is real, human activity contributes to it, but it is not significant enough to warrant the current regime of regulations by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to limit carbon emissions.

Or to justify a restrictive climate deal struck between the Obama administration and China — where the U.S. agrees to limit energy consumption long before the Chinese would.

Are Republicans attempting to thread the needle on climate change? Are they succeeding?

Politico ran a story on the series of votes entitled, "Republicans outfox Democrats on climate votes."

But perhaps a better question is why Republicans are even bothering with these symbolic votes?

A Gallup survey before the 2014 midterm elections found that just 19 percent of Republicans found climate change to be either an extremely or very important priority, compared with 61 percent of Democrats.

In the meantime, 91 percent of Republicans and 86 percent of Democrats agreed that the economy was a top priority, and 83 percent of Republicans and 89 percent of Democrats said the availability of good jobs was.

Point is, almost all voters are concerned about improving the economy and creating jobs, and comparatively far fewer are worried about climate change. Regardless of the degree to which human activities impact the climate, that is a pretty powerful political message.

Which is, posturing on climate change won't make a lick of difference electorally if the economy does not improve. So, get to work.

NHDP - Kelly Ayotte Confronted by Affordable Care Act Success Story Moments After Doubling Down on Repeal Pledge

Concord, N.H. – Just moments after pledging that the Affordable Care Act is “a bill that I have voted to repeal and it’s one that I would vote to do so again,” Kelly Ayotte came face-to-face with one of the tens of thousands of Granite Staters who would be hurt if Republican efforts to repeal the law prevailed.

The constituent, a farmer, explained that without the Affordable Care Act,  “We as farmers, who provide food for the country, would not be covered, we would not have health care, we would get sick, we could die.” Adding that thanks to the ACA, she and her husband now have “incredible health care” for roughly $300 per month.

“Even now, after more than 70,000 Granite Staters have enrolled in quality, affordable health coverage thanks to the Affordable Care Act, Kelly Ayotte is still pledging to fight for a full repeal of the law,” said New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley. “It is disappointing that instead of working towards bipartisan solutions that will expand middle class opportunity and strengthen our economy, Kelly Ayotte is trying yet again to repeal health coverage from tens of thousands of Granite Staters, putting her party's base and her national ambitions ahead of the people of New Hampshire.”

M.D. Kittle - Report finds ‘dark money’ scolder CMD doesn’t disclose union donations

By M.D. Kittle | Wisconsin Reporter

MADISON, Wis. – The Center for Media and Democracy likes to position itself as a crusader against anonymous contributions in the political realm.

But despite CMD’s self-righteous fight against so-called “dark money” in politics, the left-wing propaganda machine apparently doesn’t mind keeping the public in the dark about some big labor union checks it has cashed.

In fact, mega labor donors make up a pretty sizable share of CMD’s revenue, according to a new review of the organization’s latest tax records by the Center for Union Facts, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) that “fights for transparency and accountability in America’s labor movement.”

Madison-based CMD, a “critical cog in the Wisconsin liberal-progressive infrastructure network, has taken significant funding from major labor unions in recent years,” Union Facts states.

Controversy builds at U.S. consumer protection bureau

By   /   January 14, 2015

By Kenric Ward | Watchdog.org

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Costly building renovations at the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau are raising more congressional concerns that the agency is out of control.

A government report pegs the price of the work at $210 million — $120 million more than initial estimates, with off-site leasing costs included.

“That’s more per square foot than the Bellagio hotel-casino in Las Vegas,” said John Berlau, a senior fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute.

And, critics add, CFPB doesn’t even own the building.

Personal Liberty Digest - Admiring Hillary!

According to a poll released Monday by the Gallup organization, the woman most admired by Americans during 2014 is Hillary Clinton. Soak that in for a moment. Of the approximately 165 million or so members of the fairer sex who call America home, the one who most inspires the people of this great nation is — according to Gallup — a woman who actually blamed her husband’s endless scandals and the fallout therefrom on a so-called “vast right-wing conspiracy.” With so many impressive, successful and even inspirational women from whom to choose, the most respondents selected the ex-first lady, U.S. senator, presidential also-ran and secretary of State.

As if Hill-dawg’s hold on the top spot isn’t enough to make us wonder about Gallup’s polling samples, leafing backward through the years to Hillary’s arrival on the national stage reveals an even more troubling trend. The woman, whose entire resume comprises four decades of being humiliated by her husband, pretending “first lady” is an elected office, and then cashing in the humiliations and hubris on a senatorial seat in a state in which she didn’t live, has been the most admired woman in Gallup’s annual poll on the topic in 17 of the past 18 years. I’m curious if Gallup polled anyone outside the Wellesley College Womyn’s Club and the MSNBC interns.

Personal Liberty Digest - Obama climate scientist hedges on global warming

Here we have John Holdren, assistant to the President for Science and Technology, answering a member of the public’s question about the role of mankind in shaping the Earth’s climate. His response is interesting, because it attempts to fuse the president’s politics with the realities (as we currently understand them) of geological time.

Of course, those are two things that don’t reconcile. And Holdren’s response takes into account the eons-long trend of glaciation, as well as the momentary anthropocentric global warming fad:

We know beyond any reasonable doubt that humans are the main cause of the warming of the earth’s climate that has been measured over the past few decades…

Obama administration dumps thousands of new regulations ahead of holiday

The Obama administration last week continued its tradition of dumping its massive regulatory agenda just as Washington shut down for the holidays. This year’s Unified Agenda is comprised of 3,415 regulations, 189 of which are expected to cost more than $100 million.

The latest semi-annual regulatory road map includes an unsurprising dictate for the Environmental Protection Agency to finalize of greenhouse gas rules for coal-fired power plants by 2015. It also calls for the issuance of a final rule on coal ash residue no later than Dec. 19.

The coal as rule could result in as much as $20.3 billion in compliance costs, most of which will be paid by the power sector.

Another EPA rule listed for finalization in the agenda is the government’s attempt to redefine the Clean Water Act’s “Waters of the United States” rule, a process that has been criticized by the nation’s agribusiness community as well as concerned landowners.[...]

USA Today: Obamacare "Accelerates Demise of Rural Hospitals"

Katie Pavlich | Nov 14, 2014

As Gruber-Gate continues and as Obamacare heads back to the Supreme Court over the validity of federal subsidies in states that do not use federal healthcare exchanges, the legislation continues to take an extremely negative toll on the nation's healthcare system and hospitals.

In a piece published yesterday, USA Today writers Jayne O'Donnell and Laura Ungar detail the devastating effect the Affordable Care Act is having on rural hospitals.

Since the beginning of 2010, 43 rural hospitals — with a total of more than 1,500 beds — have closed, according to data from the North Carolina Rural Health Research Program. The pace of closures has quickened: from 3 in 2010 to 13 in 2013, and 12 already this year. Georgia alone has lost five rural hospitals since 2012, and at least six more are teetering on the brink of collapse. Each of the state's closed hospitals served about 10,000 people — a lot for remaining area hospitals to absorb.

The Affordable Care Act was designed to improve access to health care for all Americans and will give them another chance at getting health insurance during open enrollment starting this Saturday. But critics say the ACA is also accelerating the demise of rural outposts that cater to many of society's most vulnerable. These hospitals treat some of the sickest and poorest patients — those least aware of how to stay healthy. Hospital officials contend that the law's penalties for having to re-admit patients soon after they're released are impossible to avoid and create a crushing burden.

This news comes on top of other negative factors we've already seen as a result of Obamacare: limited healthcare choices and networks, loss of innovation in the medical device industry due to over taxation, massive loss of insurance coverage, and 6-out-of-10 doctors retiring early.  [...]

Personal Liberty Digest - IRS lawyers admit they never actually looked for Lerner emails

Former IRS official Lois Lerner’s “lost” emails are actually just emails that no one within the agency bothered to try to find.

Judicial Watch, a conservative nonprofit which is in the midst of an ongoing legal battle with the IRS over the emails, reported last week:

[T]he Internal Revenue Service (IRS) admitted to the court that it failed to search any of the IRS standard computer systems for the “missing” emails of Lois Lerner and other IRS officials. The admission appears in an IRS legal brief opposing the Judicial Watch request that a federal court judge allow discovery into how “lost and/or destroyed” IRS records relating to the targeting of conservative groups may be retrieved. The IRS is fighting Judicial Watch’s efforts to force testimony and document production about the IRS’ loss of records in Judicial Watch’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) litigation about the IRS targeting of Tea Party and other opponents of President Obama (Judicial Watch v. IRS (No. 1:13-cv-1559)).  The lawsuit is before U.S. District Court Judge Emmett G. Sullivan.

Lawyers representing Judicial Watch concluded that the IRS “did not undertake any significant efforts to obtain the emails.” [...]

CPR - Knives Kill More People Each Year Than Rifles: Time For Knife Control?

November 11, 2014 By Stephen Frank

The time has come for you to register your steak knives, fishing knives and butter knives. Statistics are clear, more people are killed by knives than by guns. So, if guns are so dangerous we need a database of owners, why not be honest and create a database of knife owners? Yes, before you buy a knife there needs to be a waiting period, a background check, and they must be locked away when not in use.

“The FBI statistics show that knives have been used as a murder weapon far more often than rifles — even those evil “assault weapons” we hear so much about — for quite a while. In 2013, knives or other cutting instruments were used to kill 1,490 victims. In contrast, rifles were the cause of death of 285 murder victims. Shotguns were used in 308 murders. In 2009, the ratio was very similar: knives were used in five times as many murders as rifles. [...]

Canada's Top 10 on USA Stupidity!

Canada's Version of David Letterman's Top 10

Just makes you wanna shake your head in disbelief.
This is Canada's Top Ten List of America's Stupidity
Of course we look like idiots .... because we are.

Number 10 Only in America could politicians talk about the greed of the
rich at a $35,000.00 per plate Obama campaign fund-raising event.

Number 9 Only in America ...could people claim that the government still
discriminates against black Americans when they have a black President,
a black Attorney General and roughly 20% of the federal workforce is
black while only 14% of the population is black 40+% of all federal
entitlements goes to black Americans - 3X the rate that go to whites, 5X
the rate that go to Hispanics!

Number 8 Only in America...could they have had the two people most
responsible for our tax code, Timothy Geithner (the head of the Treasury
Department) and Charles Rangel (who once ran the Ways and Means
Committee), BOTH turn out to be tax cheats who are in favor of higher taxes.

Number 7 Only in America...can they have terrorists kill people in the
name of Allah and have the media primarily react by fretting that
Muslims might be harmed by the backlash.

Number 6 Only in America...would they make people who want to legally
become American citizens wait for years in their home countries and pay
tens of thousands of dollars for the privilege, while they discuss
letting anyone who sneaks into the country illegally just 'magically'
become American citizens (probably should be number one).

Number 5 Only in America....could the people who believe in balancing
the budget and sticking by the country's Constitution be thought of as
EXTREMIST’S.

Number 4 Only in America...could you need to present a driver's license
to cash a check or buy alcohol, but not to vote.

Number 3 Only in America...could people demand the government
investigate whether oil companies are gouging the public because the
price of gas went up when the return on equity invested in a major U.S.
Oil company(Marathon Oil) is less than half of a company making tennis
shoes (Nike).

Number 2 Only in America... could you collect more tax dollars from the
people than any nation in recorded history, still spend a Trillion
dollars more than it has per year - for total spending of $7-Million PER
MINUTE, and complain that it doesn't have nearly enough money.

And Number 1 Only in America...could the rich people- who pay 86% of all
income taxes - be accused of not paying their "fair share" by people who
don't pay any income taxes at all.

Townhall - Obamacare Architect: Yeah, We Lied to The "Stupid" American People to Get It Passed

Katie Pavlich | Nov 10, 2014

Meet Jonathan Gruber, a professor at MIT and an architect of Obamacare. During a panel event last year about how the legislation passed, turning over a sixth of the U.S. economy to the government, Gruber admitted that the Obama administration went through "tortuous" measures to keep the facts about the legislation from the American people, including covering up the redistribution of wealth from the healthy to the sick in the legislation that Obamacare is in fact a tax. The video of his comments just recently surfaced ahead of the second open enrollment period for Obamacare at Healthcare.gov.

"You can't do it political, you just literally cannot do it. Transparent financing and also transparent spending. I mean, this bill was written in a tortured way to make sure CBO did not score the mandate as taxes. If CBO scored the mandate as taxes the bill dies. Okay? So it’s written to do that," Gruber said. "In terms of risk rated subsidies, if you had a law which said that healthy people are going to pay in, you made explicit healthy people pay in and sick people get money, it would not have passed. Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage. And basically, call it the stupidity of the American voter or whatever, but basically that was really really critical to get for the thing to pass. Look, I wish Mark was right that we could make it all transparent, but I’d rather have this law than not."

A few points. 1. Notice how lying to the American people is completely justified by Obama administration standards so long as the ends justify the means. Gruber would "rather have this law than not," and therefore purposely lying about what the law actually is in order to get it passed is completely acceptable. regardless of the negative effects it has on the lives of Americans. 2. Lack of transparency might be a huge political advantage in the short term, but long term there are consequences from voters, which is exactly what we saw last week during the Democrat blood bath at every level of government across the country. 3. Insulting Americans as stupid and deceiving them is a really good way to lose your power on Capitol Hill, which is again exactly what we saw last week in the 2014 midterms. Twenty-eight Senators who voted for Obamacare are now out of the Senate for one reason or another.[...]

APIA - Fed Chair Crosses Line on Eve of Elections

Dear Monetary Policy Observer,

One of the underlying foundations of the Federal Reserve’s credibility is that it is a strictly nonpartisan entity.  This foundation was shaken this morning as The Hill reported that Janet Yellen made a public appearance with President Barack Obama the night before closely contested midterms.

The Fed’s independence is predicated on its distance from partisan fights, and the Chair should be held to a high standard in that regard.  Publicly appearing with elected officials on the eve of an election will only create undue concern that the Fed is trying to influence politics.

Sincerely,

Newsmax - Letters Link Jeanne Shaheen to IRS Targeting Scandal

Tuesday, 04 Nov 2014 07:53 AM

By Melanie Batley

New Hampshire Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen was among six U.S. Senators who exchanged correspondence with a top official at the IRS about cracking down on the political activity of tax-exempt groups, The Daily Caller reports.

Letters obtained by the Caller show that in 2012, the IRS wrote to Shaheen and the other Senators after they contacted then-IRS commissioner Doug Shulman expressing concern about new nonprofit groups engaging in political activity.

"The IRS is aware of the current public interest in this issue," IRS chief counsel William Wilkins personally wrote in a hand-stamped memo on Treasury Department letterhead, according to the Caller.

"We will consider proposed changes in this area as we work with Tax-Exempt and Government Entities and the Treasury Department's Office of Tax Policy to identify tax issues that should be addressed" in designing new regulations and "guidance," Wilkins wrote.

The agency tried to avoid releasing the correspondences, according to the Caller, delaying their release to a major conservative super PAC several times and threatening the group with court action. The PAC, Citizens for a Strong New Hampshire, which was targeted by the agency for scrutiny, had called on the release of the communications in a Freedom of Information Act request.[...]

Personal Liberty Digest - Slouching from infanticide to ‘toddlercide’

Posted on October 31, 2014October 30, 2014

Baby killing (abortion) is a growing industry backed by all kinds of monstrous justification.

Just how intelligent is a race of people who will themselves to extinction? We should call it a moral crisis.

We fear tyranny, war, disease and fear economic depression; but we have absolutely no fear of self-extinction.

Since 1973, there have been 56.6 million abortions. But this is apparently not enough. According to anecdotal evidence presented by pro-life groups Created Equal and Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust, an astonishing number of college students say they support post-birth abortion — or what we commonly call murder.

These murders should take place up to ages 4 and 5, students say, because the children are not yet “self-aware.”

The devaluation of life has become public policy in America, hence the death panels in Obamacare and forced funding of abortifacients in Obamacare healthcare plans. Abortion has long been a central plank of the godless Democrat Party. It’s now joined by homosexual “marriage.”[...]
