MANCHESTER, NH – As Ovide Lamontagne accepts the endorsement of Executive Councilor Dan St. Hilaire today, he should tell the people of New Hampshire whether he supports St. Hilaire’s efforts to de-fund Planned Parenthood.
“Planned Parenthood provides critical life-saving services for thousands of women across New Hampshire, including cancer screenings. Dan St. Hilaire’s political games hurt women across New Hampshire, who suddenly lost access to affordable birth control and health care screenings,” said Maggie Hassan, Democratic candidate for Governor.
“On a day where I announced the support of over 125 women from across the state and from all political parties, Ovide Lamontagne has accepted the endorsement of someone who is responsible for defunding Planned Parenthood in New Hampshire. The contrast could not be more clear.”
“Ovide Lamontagne has long had an extreme record on women’s reproductive health care. As he accepts Dan St. Hilaire’s endorsement, Ovide Lamontagne should tell the people of New Hampshire whether he would defund Planned Parenthood and would he cut funding for other family planning services?”
In the face of the threat of a veto from Gov. John Lynch, the Legislature rejected a bill to de-fund Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood was the winning bidder for the family planning contract and its contracts had been approved in the past – without controversy – by Republican Governors and Republican executive councilors. Federal funds are not used for abortion services. Despite all those efforts, St. Hilaire voted to block Planned Parenthood’s contract.
Lamontagne supports a human life amendment to the U.S. constitution, which would criminalize all abortions, and even some forms of fertility treatments.
Earlier today, more than 125 New Hampshire women launched “Women for Maggie” steering committee – a new group to organize support for Maggie Hassan across the state.
“New Hampshire women know what is at stake in this election,” said Kathy Sullivan, an attorney and Democratic National Committeewoman. “Maggie Hassan will protect women’s freedom to make their own personal health care decisions and Ovide Lamontagne and Kevin Smith won’t. Either Ovide or Kevin would be a disaster for women and families. We need a Governor who trusts women.”
