Horn For Congress - Joseph and Augusta Petrone Host Event For Jennifer Horn
NASHUA –Ambassador and Mrs. Joseph Petrone hosted over 90 people at their home in Dublin last night in support of Jennifer Horn for Congress.
Augusta Petrone remarked: “Jennifer is wonderful. I am so proud that she has chosen to stand up and fight to make the world a better place by going to Congress and saying NO! Joseph and I fully trust Jennifer to go to Congress and fight for solutions to this country’s problems.”
The featured speaker was Daveed Gartstein-Ross, Vice President of Research for the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. In his 20 minute remarks, Daveed Gartstein-Ross spoke about “Terrorism, Skyrocketing Oil Prices, the Future of the West and the 2008 Elections”
“What I appreciate about Jennifer is that while we may not always agree, she is always willing to hear the other side and debate the issues important to all Americans. We need someone like Jennifer in Congress who will put partisan bickering aside to work together on fixing this country’s biggest problems of energy and terrorism. I am confident that Jennifer can show the necessary leadership on these critical issues,” said Mr. Gradstein-Ross.
“I am delighted to have the support of so many wonderful people,” stated Horn. “Congress has failed the American people. We will no long stand idly by as career politicians continue their do nothing approach. The business as usual mentality must change and it starts right here in the 2nd District. With the support of the Petrones and the many supporters who attended last night, I will bring that change to Washington.”

Would they also have Castro rum and Stalin Vodka? by Ivan Osorio “Cato’s Tom Palmer says that whenever he sees somebody sporting a Che Guevara t-shirt, he likes to ask the wearer, ‘That’s a great t-shirt; do you have the entire collection?’ The wearer usually responds either with a blank stare or by asking Tom what does he mean, to which Tom then responds: ‘You know, Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot…’ Now Che is in the right company in at least one type of merchandise.” http://www.openmarket.org/2008/06/30/would-they-also-have-castro-rum-and-stalin-vodka/

Rethinking Valentine v. Chrestensen Valentine v. Chrestensen was a landmark 1942 Supreme Court ruling declaring that the Constitution does not protect commercial speech. This precedent has allowed Congress and the states to pass a variety of laws substantially impeding free speech and free association, where such freedom is used for “merely commercial” ends. http://www.openmarket.org/2008/07/01/rethinking-valentine-v-chrestensen/

Newsmax - CNN Poll: Nader Garners 6 Percent of Vote
http://www.newsmax.com/insidecover/cnn_poll_nader/2008/07/02/109439.html?s=al&promo_code=6577-1
Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader received 6 percent of the vote in a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released Wednesday, bringing him closer to his goal of participating in the upcoming presidential debates.
The CNN/ORC poll of registered voters shows Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in a statistical dead heat at 46 percent and 43 percent respectively, while Libertarian Party candidate Bob Barr received 3 percent of the vote.
Nader’s camp, who complains he isn’t given the same chance to promote his candidacy’s objectives as the other two major party’s presidential nominees, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., says he needs to poll nationally at about 10 percent to gain entry into the upcoming town hall debates, as well as the Google-sponsored internet debate set for Sept. 18 in New Orleans.
Staffers working on behalf of Nader’s fifth run at the White House are convinced the perennial candidate could poll as high as 20 percent if allowed to take part in the debates.
The Nader-Matt Gonzalez independent ticket plans to finish petitioning in at least 45 of the 50 states prior to the Sept. 18 debate.
Campaign operatives working for the candidate and his running mate, Matt Gonzales — a politician, lawyer, and activist prominent in San Francisco politics — feel anything can happen once a three-way race between Obama, McCain and their candidate is established.
At a news conference and campaign rally to be held Thursday in Hawaii, Nader will outline his party platform, which includes:
- A comprehensive, negotiated military and corporate withdrawal date from Iraq;
- A single-payer, Canadian-style, private delivery, free-choice public health insurance system for all;
- A living wage and repeal of the anti-union Taft-Hartley Act;
- A no-nuke, solar-based energy policy supported by renewable, sustainable, energy-efficient sources;
- A carbon tax to deter global warming;
- An end to the corporate welfare and corporate crime; and
- A more direct democracy that emphasizes people over corporations.

Office of Congresswoman Shea-Porter - Announces Lower Student Loan Interest Rate
Washington , DC – Congresswoman Shea-Porter is pleased to announce that as of July 1, the federal student loan interest rate has been lowered to 6.00%. The rate cut, from 6.8% to 6.00%, is the first of a series of cuts that will take place over the next three years, as part of the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007.
The College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 (H.R. 2669) was signed into law on September 27, 2007. It makes college more affordable for middle-class students and families by reducing interest rates on subsidized federal Stafford Loans for undergraduate students. This reduction will save the average student in New Hampshire more than $2,500 over the life of their loan.
“ As a member of the House Education & Labor Committee, I was proud to cosponsor the College Cost Reduction and Access Act ,” stated Congresswoman Shea-Porter. “ It is a significant step towards making college more affordable for New Hampshire’s students .”
In addition to the 0.8% cut that took place on July 1, the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 will continue to lower interest rates in several phases over the next three years, culminating in a rate of 3.4% in 2011.
