Horn For Congress - Joseph and Augusta Petrone Host Event For Jennifer Horn
NASHUA –Ambassador and Mrs. Joseph Petrone hosted over 90 people at their home in Dublin last night in support of Jennifer Horn for Congress.
Augusta Petrone remarked: “Jennifer is wonderful. I am so proud that she has chosen to stand up and fight to make the world a better place by going to Congress and saying NO! Joseph and I fully trust Jennifer to go to Congress and fight for solutions to this country’s problems.”
The featured speaker was Daveed Gartstein-Ross, Vice President of Research for the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. In his 20 minute remarks, Daveed Gartstein-Ross spoke about “Terrorism, Skyrocketing Oil Prices, the Future of the West and the 2008 Elections”
“What I appreciate about Jennifer is that while we may not always agree, she is always willing to hear the other side and debate the issues important to all Americans. We need someone like Jennifer in Congress who will put partisan bickering aside to work together on fixing this country’s biggest problems of energy and terrorism. I am confident that Jennifer can show the necessary leadership on these critical issues,” said Mr. Gradstein-Ross.
“I am delighted to have the support of so many wonderful people,” stated Horn. “Congress has failed the American people. We will no long stand idly by as career politicians continue their do nothing approach. The business as usual mentality must change and it starts right here in the 2nd District. With the support of the Petrones and the many supporters who attended last night, I will bring that change to Washington.”
Office of Congresswoman Shea-Porter - Announces Lower Student Loan Interest Rate
Washington , DC – Congresswoman Shea-Porter is pleased to announce that as of July 1, the federal student loan interest rate has been lowered to 6.00%. The rate cut, from 6.8% to 6.00%, is the first of a series of cuts that will take place over the next three years, as part of the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007.
The College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 (H.R. 2669) was signed into law on September 27, 2007. It makes college more affordable for middle-class students and families by reducing interest rates on subsidized federal Stafford Loans for undergraduate students. This reduction will save the average student in New Hampshire more than $2,500 over the life of their loan.
“ As a member of the House Education & Labor Committee, I was proud to cosponsor the College Cost Reduction and Access Act ,” stated Congresswoman Shea-Porter. “ It is a significant step towards making college more affordable for New Hampshire’s students .”
In addition to the 0.8% cut that took place on July 1, the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 will continue to lower interest rates in several phases over the next three years, culminating in a rate of 3.4% in 2011.

Manchester, NH – In what supporters of the President have dubbed his “legacyyear,” AmericansUnited for Change, the progressive issue-advocacy group best known for leading the successful fight to beat back President Bush’s effort to privatize Social Security in 2005, has hitthe road its latest effort, the Bush Legacy Bus. The bus is a 45-footlong, 28 ton, clean bio-diesel-powered museum on wheels featuring several interactive exhibits on how two terms of failed conservative policies supported by Bush and his allies -- including Sens. John McCain, JuddGregg and John Sununu - have weakened America’s security abroad while neglecting and undermining important priorities here at home.
The latest stop on the national Bush Legacy Tour will be at Manchester West High School (9 Notre Dame Ave.Manchester) on Monday, July 7th at 10:00 am, EST where Americans United along with local NH progressive leaders will hold Sens. They stood with Bush oneverything from tax cuts for millionaires that never managed to ‘trickle-down’ to everyone else; to a 2005 Republican energy bill written by and for big oil companies making record profits that did nothing to lower gas prices; to keeping U.S. troops struck in the crosshairs of a religious civil war in Iraq with no end in sight. The bus will be opened to the public where the people of New Hampshire will be given the chance to reflect on how 8years of failed Bush/conservative polices have left our economy in shambles, millions more without health insurance, our military stretched to the breakingpoint, and thousands each day losing their jobs, their homes, and theirdignity.
The Bush Legacy tour kicked off inWashington D.C.on June 24th and will travel coast-to-coast throughout the summer, makingnearly 150 stops in the hometowns of Bush’s allies in Congress, both nationalpolitical conventions and symbolic and historic locations like NewOrleans and Crawford,TX. Horn For Congress - Statement on Iraq Benchmark Report
NASHUA –Associated Press stories indicate that Iraq has reached several new agreements seen as critical to easing sectarian tensions. Jennifer Horn, Republican candidate for Congress, issued the following statement:
"Recent reports indicating the Iraqi government has achieved "satisfactory" progress on 15 of 18 political benchmarks bring us one step closer to the time when a stable and self-governing Iraq is in charge of its own security. While the progress is slow and not perfect, this shows that we are in fact making progress in Iraq and that we are on the right course.
As we celebrate our own Independence this week we should remember that that the fight for freedom and self-governance continues in many nations around the world. America is now, and must forever be, a beacon of hope to freedom-seeking people everywhere.
We must keep our commitment to stabilization, democracy and economic growth in Iraq. There is no single issue more challenging to America's future than the Global War on Terror. We must remember that our generals on the ground are in the best position to determine the needs of the military, not grandstanding politicians in Washington.
I call on Paul Hodes and the Democrats in Congress to get out of the way and stop setting up roadblocks to progress."
