Rep. William O’Brien’s Comments on the NH Senate’s Rejection of a 67% Hike in the Gas Tax

Mont Vernon - Rep. William O’Brien had the following comments in response to the NH Senate’s rejection of the House-passed 67% increase in the gas tax:

“The State Senate is to be congratulated for protecting the taxpayers of New Hampshire from the NH House’s 67% increase in the gas tax.

While my struggle in the House to address concerns about Red-listed Bridges and Roads by forbidding diversion of almost one-third of Highway Trust Funds away from bridge and road construction and repairs was met there by a majority calling for a 12 cent per gallon tax increase, now that this tax hike has been rejected in the Senate, I call upon House Democrats to join me in a bi-partisan solution by using the funds that the people having given us to eliminate Red-listed bridges and roads.

The time to hide behind the existence of these Red-listed dangers to the traveling public in order to raise taxes for other purposes has passed.  Let’s stop the diversion of funds.  Let’s repair those hazardous bridges and roads.  And let’s use the extra money that would come from halting the diversion of funds away from the Highway Trust Fund to finish the expansion of Rte. 93 and bring New Hampshire jobs to New Hampshire’s commuters to Massachusetts.  Whether on the state or Federal level, at some point the rhetoric must end and the obvious solutions must be adopted.”

William O’Brien is a state representative from Mont Vernon, serving his fourth term in the New Hampshire House.  He is exploring a campaign for election as New Hampshire’s member of Congress from the Second Congressional District.

O'Brien For Congress - Bill O’Brien Comments on Rep. Ann McLane Kuster Failure To Vote for Obamacare Repeal

“Ann Kuster could have voted to stop this.
Instead, she once again walked away from
New Hampshire values.”

Mont Vernon, NH – State representative Bill O’Brien, Republican candidate for Congress in the Second District, made the following comments today in response to U.S. Rep. Ann McLane Kuster’s failure to vote to repeal Obamacare when she voted last night against H.R. 45.

“Last night Rep. Kuster had the opportunity to stand with the hardworking taxpayers of New Hampshire and her constituents in New Hampshire’s Second Congressional District by repealing Obamacare. Instead, she chose to stand with Nancy Pelosi and against our citizens and even against members of her party who have said that the full implementation of Obamacare will be a ‘train wreck.’

“If fully implemented, Obamacare will hijack and wreck not only the finances of the federal government, but also our state’s finances. Obamacare will also substantially increase private healthcare insurance premiums annually and consequently it will throw millions of Americans on Medicaid.

“Medicaid relies on substantial contributions from local taxpayers, yet it doesn’t even pay for half the cost of service to its recipients. It does all of this –or, none of this rather - while failing to provide better health outcomes than being uninsured, according to a study of Medicaid expansion in Oregon.”

“In lockstep with party bosses such as Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, Rep. Ann Kuster refuses to acknowledge what is becoming increasingly obvious. And that is, by driving private insurance costs through the roof, Obmacare will consign many of those caught in its web to permanent government dependency. Small increases in family incomes will require heads of households to pay fines or purchase private health insurance that will cost vastly more than those income increases. Ann Kuster could have voted to stop this. Instead, she once again walked away from New Hampshire values.”

NHGOP STATEMENT ON KUSTER'S CONTINUED INABILITY TO EXPLAIN HER DELINQUENT TAXES

Concord, NH- NHGOP Communications Director Meg Stone released the following statement tonight on Congresswoman Annie Kuster's continued inability to explain her long history of late tax payments. In an interview with WMUR this evening, the Congresswoman still refused to explain why she was delinquent on $40,000 in property taxes over the last three years.

"Once again, Congresswoman Kuster failed to be upfront with her constituents and offer a plausible explanation for her long history of late tax payments. She refused to explain why, despite a net worth of nearly $2 million, ownership of two vacation homes, a lucrative corporate lobbying career, and investments in over 20 mutual funds, she wasn't paying her fair share in taxes. And she didn't explain why despite having the resources needed to immediately settle her tax obligations, she decided to make the payments only after the media caught her red-handed.

"Congresswoman Kuster's inability to explain herself further damages her credibility and raises even more questions that demand immediate answers. The people of the Second District deserve to know why, at a time when Annie Kuster is trying to raise their taxes, she hasn't been paying her own. Granite Staters don't want excuses, but they do expect their elected representatives to be open, honest and to provide a plausible explanation for three years of delinquent taxes."

NHDP - The Map

Dear Friend,

Yesterday, Congressional Republicans launched a website - www.gop.gov/republicans - to find and contact your local GOP Member of Congress.

Thanks to your hard work last fall, there are no Congressional Republicans from New Hampshire!

Less than a week into their term, Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter and Congresswoman Annie Kuster are already being targeted for defeat by New Hampshire Republicans. John Stephen's top strategist tweeted "NH back on the map in 2 years."  And Ovide Lamontagne's campaign manager said "Count on NH being back on that map in 2014."

It is critical we support Carol and Annie as they work each and every day for their constituents over the coming days, months, and years.

Help us build our Early Action Fund today to ensure Carol and Annie have the resources they need to fight back against the GOP attack machine.

Thank you for everything you have done already and for all you are able to do as we continue to move forward.

--Kathy
